I wasn’t going to post today as I have been neglecting my link building over recent weeks and was going to use this weekend looking for some decent one way links. However there was something I wanted to bring up about SEO and this mainly applies to blogging however it can be applied to any campaign. It will be a short post but I am sure you will be able to apply it to your SEO efforts.
Before we start a new site/blog we have to carefully think about the marketing strategy and analyse the competition out there. If we are planning on taking our site into a highly competitive niche it is going to take us 12 – 24 months to rank high enough to see significant traffic.
So what can we do to help our business grow a little faster or to produce enough traffic to help it stay on track, going for the top keywords straight away is bound to fail, this is why we need to use the power of the longtail keyword phrase. I am hoping all of you know what a longtail keyword is but if not here is a good description:-
“Long Tail keywords are those 3 and 4-keyword phrases which are very, very specific to whatever you are selling. You see, whenever a customer uses a highly specific search phrase, they tend to be looking for exactly what they are actually going to buy”
http://www.wordtracker.com/academy/three-good-reasons-to-target-long-tail-keywords
So lets say you are targeting the main keyword “gardening” a longtail version of this would be keywords such as “best gardening service” – “cheap gardening services in the uk” – “local quality gardeners” .
This is just to give you an idea of what I mean. Targeting “gardening” straight away will mean you see very little in the way of visitors and your business or blog will most likely fail. You see it is much harder to rank higher for competitive keywords and a lot is attributed to off page factors, on the other hand low competition keywords rely on, on page factors more.
Let me show you this example from SEO Book:-
High Keyword Competition Factors
Anchor Text = 20%
Community Links = 20%
Link Diversity = 15%
Domain Authority = 25%
On Page Optimisation = 5%
Site Age = 15%
So basically to rank high for competitive keywords you need thousands of anchored, relevant links and a solid domain age and authority, on page optimisation doesn’t really figure. Now look at the percentages for longtail keywords.
Longtail, Low Competition Keyword Factors
Link Diversity = 5%
In Community Links = 0%
Site Age = 15%
Link Anchor Text = 15%
Domain Authority = 15%
On Page Optimisation = 50%
So as we see for less competitive or longtail keywords on page optimisation plays a big role, this puts the keyword ranking more in our control, this makes ranking easier.
So my title started “SEO blogging”, where does this fit into blogging? Well it fits in quite simply because when we blog we create hundreds of different pages, we can optimise each one of these pages for longtail low competitive keywords by;
1 – having unique title tags
2 – optimising our h tags on that page
3 – using keyword variations in the content
4 – getting 40 – 50 anchored backlinks to that page, optimised for your chosen keyword
Before I started this blog I picked 100 longtail keywords to chase, I have got through about 25 of them and rank on the 1st page for 10 of them.
Of course the traffic does not come in huge waves but it has helped drive 100 – 150 (search engine) visits to my blog per day. Targeting longtails over time will also build up your authority for the your main keywords.
I hope everyone has understood this, if not fire me any questions in the comments or by email
